Friendship, A Better Prescription

Friendship, A Better Prescription

Does your prescription bottle say “Higher Dose of Friendship” on the label? It should!

“You probably know there are many ways to improve your well-being and chances of living longer, such as exercising more or eating better. But did you know that maintaining meaningful relationships also may play an important role in health, happiness, and longevity?”Harvard Medical School

A 75-year health study on 724 men conducted by the Harvard Study of development provided an amazing result: “The surprising finding is that our relationships and how happy we are in our relationships has a powerful influence on our health,” said Robert Waldinger, director of the study, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “Taking care of your body is important, but tending to your relationships is a form of self-care too. That, I think, is the revelation.” — The Harvard Gazette

So now that you know this, what are you going to do about it? You can’t take a pill and just get friends like that. Here are suggestions from a TED talk titled “What Makes a Good Life? Lessons from the Longest Study on Happiness,” by Robert Waldinger. Please take the link to and enjoy this short Video talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=29&v=8KkKuTCFvzI

“The people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 were the healthiest at age 80.” “Loneliness kills. It’s as powerful as smoking or alcoholism.” — Robert Waldinger

“When the study began, nobody cared about empathy or attachment. But the key to healthy aging is relationships, relationships, relationships.” — George Vaillant

In just plain language, it is not about wealth or fame. Happiness is about good relationships. So what can you do to fix this? Find friends. Build friendships. Make good friends. Remember to contact your friends. It is more the quality than the number of friends. Living in the midst of good warm relationships is protective.

If you are stuck in unhappy relationships, you may feel more pain. By contrast, good relationships can help you live longer and happier and tolerate pain more easily. It is not about a quick fix, the easy solution does not exist. If you did something to make new playmates in your life each day, moving from just working mates to fun mates, you could build good health step by step.

Mark Twain said, “The Good life is built with good relationships.”

Build better relationships each day. Take your pills too.
