Eloquent Elderly Can Be Healthier by Reading and Writing


We are more than our bodies. Why think that just keeping a body healthy and functioning is enough as we age? We spent our lives stimulating our brains, thinking, communicating, and learning. Why stop now?

“A study published on July 3 in Neurology Magazine found that reading, writing and doing other mentally stimulating activities at every age helps to reduce memory problems. The study surveyed 294 older people over six years; they were given memory and thinking tests over the course of the six-year study. Participants were categorized based on the amount of brain activities they did per day e.g. reading and writing.”

“Our study suggests that exercising your brain by taking part in activities such as these across a person’s lifetime, from childhood through old age, is important for brain health in old age,” said study author Robert S. Wilson, senior neuropsychologist of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center at the Rush University Medical Center Chicago in a press release.”

Those who kept busy had a slower rate of decline by 15%. Seniors doing the most reading and writing later in life were able to slow their memory loss by 32% compared to those with more average mental activity. A 48% faster memory decline compared to someone with average mental activity was the result for those with the least stimulation. A conclusion possible from this study is that the cognitively stimulating activities a person does can independently slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Let’s not dwell on decline, then, what can you do about this?

1. Make a book list and start reading each day

2. Find a magazine and read an article a day

3. Write, as you have never had time to write before

4. Do it in a journal, do it online, on a tablet, on a laptop

5. Find someone to read to you or listen to your stories and write them for you.
